TEA PLANTING EXPANSION PROGRAM.
Tea expansion program 2012-2017 targets to plant new 18,000 ha of tea plantations; 10,000ha for new sites, 4,138ha to complete ongoing projects and 3,862ha allocated to existing factories and constructing extra 9 new factories. The targeted area are south west Nyaruguru district while Western province Karongi, and Nyamasheke districts where climate, soil, altitude, rain and other conditions are suitable for tea growing as new sites.
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TEA FACTORIES.
Karongi and Mushubi tea factories are new, having started operating in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Rutsiro tea factory commenced in 2014 as well.
ON GOING TEA PROJECTS.
Gatare tea project is situated in the western province Nyamasheke district. The project is to plant 2,200 ha of tea in joint partnership of tea cooperative (COTHEGA) and Rwanda Tea Trading Ltd. Currently NAEB is undertaking other new sites of Rugabano (Karongi district), Kibeho and Munini (Nyaruguru District) and Cyato in Nyamasheke district). Each site will be covering 2000 ha combining both industrial bloc and small tea growers.
