On the 13th December 2019, Honorable Minister of Agriculture & Animal Resources, Dr. MUKESHIMANA Gerardine presided over a meeting in Kigali, gathering representatives of Rwanda Tea Association, Rwanda Tea Processing Factories and Rwanda Tea Farmers Cooperatives.
On the agenda, the meeting was to discuss needed changes in the pricing of tea green leaf, strategies to enhance tea productivity and impact of the tea pricing on parties, meaning farmers and tea processing factories.
The meeting was in line with the decision of the Cabinet meeting that took place on the 14th November 2012 and introduced the tea green leaf pricing formula in Rwanda. The farmer’s take home price would base on processed tea price on international markets.
The meeting resolutions include the cancellation of fees that used to be deducted from a farmer in certain occasions and in other cases. The percentage of the money given to a tea farmer increased to 50% from 40% of the price of the made tea price at international market.
On this ten percent increase, a farmer will be given five percent 5% and the remaining five percent 5% will be invested in the projects that enhance productivity and a more refined tea.
